Four Ways to Deal with Post Harry Potter Depression

Harry Potter fans have been waiting with baited breath for several years to find out what’s going to happen to the boy wizard. Will he defeat Voldemort? Will he die? With each new novel, a big portion of the world has followed Harry’s adventures with the anticipation of that holy Hogwarts grail known as “Book 7.”

With only days before its official release, fans are at the peak of Harry Potter excitement. But let’s face it – reality will come soon enough. With all the excitement that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is bringing when it hits store shelves, it’s also going to mark the end of a literary era. After this round with Harry Potter, we’ll no longer be able to follow him into the world of wizard adulthood.

Avid readers recognize how easy it is to become attached to a book character. Harry Potter and his friends have proven this throughout the series. With such a psychological attachment, there’s bound to be a “mourning” period when you finish reading the final chapter. Some readers may simply close their book with a sigh and not feel anything. But many will feel a loss. The anticipation is over and there’s not even another book to look forward to.

Don’t give in to “Deathly Hallows” depression. Here are four ways you can deal with reaching the end of the Harry Potter journey.

1. Go back and relive the saga – Don’t think that just because you’ve read all the books once that the journey has to end. Many people have already read each of the books several times. If you haven’t, take the chance to do it. You’re likely to find things you may have missed the first time. It’s fun to make connections between things in earlier books and later books. Take your time with the second, third, or fourth reading. You can make Harry Potter last way beyond that final page.

2. Find a new literary love – Harry Potter opened the way for many new adventures. If you haven’t had enough of the magical world in general, try another great series, like the Eragon books or the stories of Artemis Fowl. “A Series of Unfortunate Events” was popular after the movie release and is often compared to Harry Potter in enjoyment value. You can also try something new. Find a totally different genre of books and expand your literary world. Finding another favorite character is important. Don’t worry…Harry won’t get jealous.

3. Get ready for the movies – Even though book seven is almost here and almost gone, this summer is only seeing the fifth movie, which means that there are two more still waiting to hit theaters. While they’re a few years away, a few years is nothing new for the old pros who’ve waited that long for each book. Critics of the movies will argue that they don’t come anywhere close to being as great as the books. But those wanting to keep that Harry Potter anticipation going will look forward to the upcoming cinematic adventures still in store.

4. Try your hand at fan fiction – Fan fiction isn’t for everyone. Loyalists are usually against fan fiction because it takes away from the original intent of the stories. But if you want some adventure and have your own ideas on how Harry Potter’s story should continue, there are several HP fan fiction sites on the web. A Google search will yield a listing of some great sites, including MuggleNet and harrypotterfanfiction.com. Read what goes on in the imaginations of others or write your own thoughts. Who knows? Writing fan fiction can lead to some unique ideas of your own and you could be the next big fantasy author.

Be prepared for post Harry Potter depression. After the anticipation of book seven it will be normal and expected to get a case of the blahs. Don’t let that keep you from the enjoyment of reading. But until those blues set in, enjoy the final journey? As a Harry Potter fan myself, I already know that the wait will have been well worth it!
