Never Underestimate the Power of Exercise and Nutrition

Depression has become a widespread phenomenon, with most of us knowing someone, or being someone who has experienced depression at some point in their lives. For most of us, depression may come temporarily, in a mild form, that is easily overcome without the need for prescription medications.

One of the most effective methods of combating mild depression is seeking support from friends and family. It may be that your loved ones do not even know you are feeling the way you do, so a simple gesture to let them know could be the support you need. Like anything, if you do not speak up, no one will know, so by saying you are not feeling the best and have been a bit down allows those who care about you to step in and try and help.

By letting others know you are feeling depressed, a great weight is often lifted off your shoulders. Suddenly you will not feel the need to hide the way you are feeling and can instead talk to others about the emotions and stressors you are experiencing to cause your depression. It may even be that you do not even know why you are feeling down, so by sharing your feelings, others can help you pinpoint the causes.

Often the last thing you feel like doing when you are feeling depressed is exercise, however exercise happens to be a very powerful natural anti-depressant. Exercise releases hormones into the body that stimulate a sense of feeling good about yourself. It also helps increase your energy once you get into a routine, which is very useful when you are experiencing depression-related exhaustion.

It is vital to get as much exercise as possible when you are feeling depressed. This does not mean heading off and joining the gym. Even small efforts can make a big difference, so instead of driving to the corner store to pick up milk, walk there yourself. Or go for a stroll around the neighborhood in the early evening with your partner or a friend. If you are up for something a little more energetic, try a team sport, like a casual game of tennis with a friend or kicking the football around the park with the kids. All these activities can help increase the endorphins released into your system and increase your feelings of happiness. Exercise also gives you a sense of achievement, which is an added bonus.

There are many foods that you can eat that will assist in combating depression. These include most healthy options, so be sure to include lots of green leafy vegetables in your diet. Nuts are also known for their good qualities. Also foods such as strawberries, mangoes and the type of foods that are said to work as an aphrodisiac are all essential foods to include in your diet. Those so called effects to get you in the mood for love can actually help to just get you in the mood for basic life tasks, such as getting out of bed in the morning, so be sure to monitor your diet and cut out all those greasy, unhealthy options. You may not feel like cooking, but it is guaranteed that if you choose the healthy, home-cooked option over the take away, you will feel better for it.

Setting goals is another great method for helping overcome depression. When we feel depressed, we lose the motivation to do simple activities, therefore setting tasks can be essential to staying on track. If you cannot be bothered getting out of bed in the morning, and everything you should be doing is being left undone, it is time to set yourself very basic goals.

These might be as simple as do a load of washing, take the bins out, pay the bills. However, what these goals are doing is getting you back into the routine you had before you felt depressed, and this makes it easier to eventually increase your daily goals until you are back to doing all the things you had been doing before. It also gives you that sense of achievement, which can help increase the feelings of self-satisfaction depression drains us of.

However, it is important to remember that if your symptoms of depression are not improving, or if they are worsening to a point where you feel you cannot cope with them anymore, it is vital you seek professional assistance, either through a mental health professional, or a general practitioner, who can refer you to someone who can help. While it is good to explore alternative options first, it may be that your depression is severe enough to warrant further treatment or intervention, and this should not be ignored.
