Before choosing an anti anxiety medication it is worthwhile considering whether or not this is necessary. Symptoms of anxiety are often experienced for valid reasons; for example, pending exams and operations, public speaking and court appearances. In cases such as these, anxiety is acute and therefore needs dealing with. Medication is not often advocated in these situations, there are many relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga that are beneficial. If, however, this is not enough to relieve the symptoms, there are herbal remedies such as rescue remedy that can pull you through the dreaded deed.

In some cases anxiety is a debilitating illness and may lead to serious conditions such as panic disorder, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder and post traumatic stress disorder and medication is frequently needed to relieve the symptoms. Such as:

Excessive perspiration
Breathlessness
Trembling
Heart palpitations
Insomnia
A deep sense of gloom

The most common medications prescribed in the treatment of chronic forms of anxiety are benzodiazepines and these include:

Alprazolam
Clonazepam
Diazepam
Lorazepam

These are effective in depressing activity in the part of the brain that controls emotions, therefore they reduce the brain functions that cause anxiety. Common side effects of benzodiazepines include:

Drowsiness
Dizziness
Headache

You will need to consider the effects of benzodiazepines on your lifestyle. If, for example, it is necessary that you drive or operate machinery then this type of drug is impractical.

Benzodiazepines are highly addictive so dosage and duration is usually closely monitored by a medical professional. This type of drug has short term benefits and the effects are immediate. They are frequently prescribed in conjunction with therapy in order to deal with the underlying issues responsible for the anxiety.

Drugs known as Beta blockers are sometimes used to treat anxiety and these include:

Oxprenolol
Propranolol

These are mainly prescribed for the treatment of physical symptoms, but are not so effective in alleviating the emotional factors of anxiety. They work by blocking the action of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline also known as norepinephrinein. Common side effects of beta blockers include:

Lethargy
Cold hands and feet
Nausea

Buspirone is a non benzodiazapine sometimes used for the treatment of anxiety. It is not addictive and does not cause drowsiness. However, it is only effective in treating limited to moderate degrees of anxiety and takes 2 to 3 weeks before any beneficial effect takes place. Common side effects include:

Dizziness
Nausea
Headache
Insomnia.

For whatever reason you may be experiencing anxiety, it is always advisable to discuss the problem in depth with a doctor before deciding on a course of treatment.
